Nigeria's former Minister for Environment, Amina Mohammed, was officially sworn in as the deputy Secretary-general of the United Nations (UN) at the headquarters in New York yesterday morning.
She took her oath of office from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who appointed her as his deputy last December.
After the ceremony, she stressed her commitment to sustainable development, saying she would be focusing primarily on helping the secretary-general reposition sustainable development within the UN, saying that it was the best way that we can achieve universal peace.
In addition to having been Nigeria's environmental minister, she was also previously the UN secretary-general's special adviser on post-2015 development planning and has also been the senior special assistant to Nigeria's president on the Millennium Development Goals.
In a Twitter post, Mohammed said: "Farewell Nigeria as my life journey takes another turn on the road. Thank you for your kind words of support."
