Excavation season commence at ancient Xanthos site of Lycian Union in Antalya
Ahmer Acar/ Antalya, Aug 4 (DHA) ? In Kaş district near the Antalya resort town of Turkey, summer season excavation work has began at one of the six largest cities of Lycian Union Xanthos Ancient Site. The ancient site was honoured to enter the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List along with 15 other historical artefacts.
Since 2011, excavation works that had been launched by archaeologists from France in 1950 are maintained by Akdeniz University Faculty of Arts Archaeology Department. The team led by Professor Burhan Varkıvanç consists of 8 academics, 5 archaeologists, 15 students and 10 workers, and the crew plans to pursue their works for 2.5 months.
This year's excavation will be held in three different zones, including the West Agora, a construction predicted to be the assembly building and the southeastern sector of the site, said Head of excavation works.
According to Varkıvanç, this year's work will look to solve the previous years? difficulties and will focus on particular tiers of the cite since the Byzantine elements are dominant and the whole cite had been governed in early Byzantine era.
